Mantzel engine

The engine utilized on the Zink Petite MK II was a Mantzel tuned DKW engine.

The engine before restoration was a tad grimy and could not turn over. I had pickled it some years earlier but the oil has dried sufficiently that the pistons were stuck.

The starter has gotten broken and the Bosch distributor was in need of a good going over. The ZF gear box has yet to be gone through. The engine package is actually quite small and compact.

Once i got the exhaust manifold off I started with Gibbs penetrating oil to loosen the years of glop.IMG_0024.JPG

The engine has a weber 40 DOEC carburetor that also needs to go out for overhaul.

Bosch water pump/Generator housing, the generator portion of the assembly was removed but the water pump is functional. The unit will be rebuilt but I have obtained a refurbished SAAB 93 unit which is a 12 volt Bosch unit. This will be needed for the head lights and tail lights that shall be functional  as they were in the beginning. The sports racing rules of the day required functional head lights and tail lights and the Zink had them. It will get restored to the original configuration except in the 1967 12 volt configuration vs the original 6 volt configuration the car originally was set up in.IMG_0028.JPG

Here is the Intake manifold removed and carefully removing the gasket and spacer to be preserved so now ones can be made.

The Distributor

The distributor housing has been removed to inspect the pulley and spring assembly. The pulley was found to have been repaired but the brazing has loosened and needs to be done again.

The engine now stripped of all working components time to get it apart.

The pistons were well stuck in the block and with allot of Gibbs penetrating oil and patience it slowly started to come apart.

I was finally able to remove the crank as a whole assemble.

Inspection of the pistons found that these were the ones Joe Virog had machined in 1966. The rings were stuck on a couple and after many hours of penetrating oil and tapping they all came loose.

The bore was clean even after all these years. Not bad for sitting 25 years.IMG_0546.JPG

Rebirth

The engine now cleaned and repainted with the engine mount and generator mount installed on my bench. The crank still needs bearing replaced as the grease has dried out of the sealed bearings on the crank on one.

DKW 2 stroke engines have solid connecting rods and the crank is disassembled to get the bearings off the crank. The bearings are sealed as they are not bathed in oil like a normal modern engine so the crank has to be pressed apart and back together. Not to many people know how to do this much balance the crank.

So the engine although going back together needs to come apart to have some one replace the  bearings. Just finding someone has been a real challenge to find anyone in the US that knows how to pull the crank apart and knows which bearings to get to replace the old ones. I have a couple of resources in Europe but if anyone knows of a resource in the US please email me.

The engine is back together with the generator bracket and forward engine mount in place, intake manifold on as well but without is spacer and gasket. Starting to look good!!
