Bosch Generator/Water Pump

The Zink Petite MK II utilized a combination 6 Volt Bosch generator/water pump unit. According to the letter that Ed wrote Auto Union the unit was from a DKW 1000 SP. I do know that the SAAB 93 utilized the same unit but in 12 Volt. The picture below is of the unit attached to the engine. It is still in need if a servicing. The Bosch unit had at some point had its generator internal components removed and it was/is only a water pump. I think Joe Virog did this in 1967 when the car was converted to 12 Volt to go with the new distributor also from a SAAB 93.

  1. Belt pulley off first

2)  Spacer and woodruff key removed.IMG_5380

3) The water pump pretty gummed up with years of dust and gunk.IMG_5382

4) Think I need a new one, oops can’t go to NAPA for a seal for the water pump, Guess I will have to make one.IMG_5386

5) A little cleaning on the wire wheel on the grinder did wonders

6) All cleaned and repainted.IMG_5405

7) New seal made and brass end cleaned. I found this like so many other parts are one offs.IMG_5411

8) I found that whom ever rebuilt the water pump last time used what ever they had as the bolts were way to long and had been shimmed out with multiple washers. SO off to the store for shorter ones plus the bolts were SAE threaded vs the whole unit being metric, ouch.IMG_5414

9) The water pump going back together loosely for storage.

10) The Generator housing and water pump mostly back together. Some crush washers needed for the plugs. This unit will be held in reserve as I will use the 12 volt SAAB Gen/Water pump that is identical so I can power the head lights/tail lights as it was in its eary life.IMG_5418

One more bit down!!
